A stroll on the Uldale Fells and a very wet walk over Lingmoor.

The Uldale Fells "Back O'Skidda" are quite different from the bigger and craggier mountains of the Central and Western Lake District even though one or two tops do just rise above 2000 feet. However if you want to get away from the crowds and enjoy pleasant grassy walking this is the place to be. The best and easiest approach is via a broad track at GR 253336 OS Sheet OL4 where there is very limited parking at the roadside just beyond start of the track. Follow the track around Orthwaite Bank, at first gently uphill, then down to cross Burn Tod Gill. Continue up the unnamed narrowing gill between Burn Tod and White Hause to eventually emerge on to open fellside at narrow path. To the left the path leads to Knott from where walking NNE across a boggy depression brings you to Great Sca Fell. A boot wide grassy path now takes you fairly steeply down to a col then a short ascent is made to reach the hill fort of Meal Fell. Down again to the col called Trusmadoor and a junction with Burn Tod Gill. Finally a still narrow path is followed above a line of small crags then leftwards to the top of Great Cockup. There are narrow paths from there onwards but by just heading westwards one eventually arrives back at the start of this excellent and uncrowded circuit.

The traverse of Lingmoor between Great and Little Langdale can be started from Elterwater and from its top descend to the Blea Tarn Road then follow the well marked and constructed path down towards the Langdale Campsite. From there a number of ways back to Elterwater are possible even the rather infrequent bus service. I prefer to walk.
